Coincided with World Food Safety Day 2022 (7 June 2022), ISO has published two standards that will advance food safety globally by harmonizing the requirements for certification bodies (CBs) providing audit and certification as per following:
- ISO 22003-1:2022supplements ISO/IEC 17021 1:2015 and covers food safety management systems (FSMS).
- ISO 22003-2:2022supplements ISO/IEC 17065:2012 and covers food safety systems (FSS) when implemented alongside a product certification.
WCS’s Action
WCS is now adopting FSMS* Note 1, i.e. ISO 22003-1:2022 in managing the new and existing certificates of ISO22000:2018. This will be an internal upgrading of WCS in contract review process. The following changes are highlighted, and the last date to complete the transition is on 30 JUNE 2025.
1. CHANGES IN FOOD CATEGORIES
Some amendments were made to food chain category. Divides the food supply chain into:
- 9 Clusters (e.g. primary production, processing food for humans &animals)
- 11 Categories (e.g. food processing, feed processing)
- 12 Subcategories (e.g. farming animals, farming fish)
2. CHANGES IN AUDIT TIMES
In this new standard, the formula to calculate the audit time duration for ISO22000:2018 changed. In the case of multi-site certification, the formula for multi-site sampling (when applicable) changed.
3. CHANGES IN USE OF MARKS
“ISO22000-Certified“ statement and ISO22000 Logo shall NOT be used on product packaging that the client has a certified FSMS. This includes all product packaging, both primary packaging (which contains the product) and any outer or secondary packaging. Any existing printed statement to be removed by 30 June 2025. Concurrent to this change, WCS has revised the Use of Logo – FSMS document. Kindly contact WCS for further information required.
All clients will be briefed on the impacts of this new standard during the on-site audit (either surveillance audits, recertification audits or special audits) by the trained auditors, if relevant, e.g. audit manday, food category, use of logo, with effective from 1 September 2023.
Note 1: FSMS certification ~ a certification, based on ISO’s harmonized requirements for management systems, that incorporates food safety requirements based on the internationally accepted principles of food safety (i.e. prerequisite programmes and, as appropriate, control measures that result from either a site specific or generic hazard analysis).
